Erin  + Sean // Married Friday, January 11th, 2019, at NYC City Hall

A note from Alexis //
This is a series where I ask some of my recently wed couples
to share their experience planning their weddings:
the excellent, the awful, and ultimately, the awesome things
about their truly unforgettable marriage celebrations.

Tell us a little about yourselves, and how you decided to get married:

We decided to move from New York to California and realized if we were going to get married, we should probably do it before settling 3,000 miles away from our loved ones. We had been dating for thirteen years, and getting married was a way to confirm each other as family before the big move.

What was your favorite part of your marriage day and planning process? What was the hardest part?

We both agree the best part of the day was celebrating at Lalito’s after the ceremony was over (Alexis’ note: unfortunately, this lovely little restaurant closed in January 2020!) Our favorite part of planning the wedding was none of it — It was stressful and tedious. The hardest part was trying to plan a wedding in such a tight time constraint (about two months).

What were your priorities as you began planning your elopement?

We wanted to keep it small. Erin was concerned with finding a reception venue that fit our vibe. Sean wanted to make sure the wedding wouldn’t be inconvenient for our guests.

What surprised you most about your elopement- planning, celebration and afterwards?

Planning: We were most surprised that even when you’re only planning a tiny wedding for twenty people, it’s still as stressful as they say. Celebration: Honestly, we couldn’t believe how affordable the venue was (This is probably not a relatable thing to say). Afterwards: We were still pretty stressed out re: the move/quitting our jobs/buying a van.

Any advice for couples at the beginning of their planning process?

Do exactly what you want and don’t worry about other people’s expectations for your wedding.

What will you always remember about your day?

Sean will remember the speeches. Erin will remember dancing.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Tiny weddings are underrated.

Thank you to Erin + Sean!
